The research behind the ranking

Understand the job before you compare the number.

CourtsideIQ organizes player analysis around basketball responsibilities, not just positions. A Primary Creator, Floor Spacer, and Defensive Anchor solve different problems. Start with that job, compare the relevant inputs, and use the five lenses to understand where production, efficiency, possession value, finishing, and salary tell different stories.

A strong role score does not prove a player can handle a larger role. A strong Smart CVR does not predict his next salary. Our guides explain those distinctions, including the assumptions and missing context that can change a conclusion. The scores are model outputs, not official NBA grades.

What CourtsideIQ does

Role first. Box score second.

01

Classify the job

Every player gets one role first: creator, spacer, stopper, anchor, finisher, connector, or developmental profile.

02

Grade the right stats

Each role has its own inputs and weights, so a floor spacer is not judged like a primary creator.

03

Show the value

REI, VSE, PIV, PFE, and CVR explain who creates impact, who scores efficiently, and who outplays the contract.

          REI

          Role Efficiency Index

The main score. It grades a player against the expectations of his assigned role and shows the role-specific inputs on player pages.

          VSE

          Volume Scoring Efficiency

Shows scoring value by balancing points, usage, true shooting, and role context, then translates that into a scorer tier.

          CVR

          Contract Value Rating

100 means fair value. Higher means the player is outperforming his salary slot after contract noise is controlled.

          PIV

          Possession Impact Value

Captures how much a player helps a possession through scoring, passing, and turnover control.

          PFE

          Player Finishing Efficiency

Measures how well a player finishes plays through scoring efficiency and clean decisions, not total scoring reputation.

          DEF

          Defensive Context

Defensive stats like DRtg and DFG% are inverted because lower is better, and missing inputs are flagged.
