CourtsideIQ is a basketball analytics project built around a question that a traditional position label cannot answer: what is this player being asked to do?
What we add to the box score
A guard who initiates the offense and a guard who spaces the floor do not have the same responsibilities. CourtsideIQ assigns a primary basketball role and evaluates the inputs relevant to that job. REI, VSE, PIV, PFE, and Smart CVR provide five different views of performance and salary context. These are CourtsideIQ model outputs, not official NBA statistics or universal measures of player quality.
The site brings those lenses into player profiles, role comparisons, team dashboards, and roster tools. Its contribution is the interpretation and organization of basketball information: comparing jobs, explaining trade-offs, and making the assumptions behind a number visible.
Where the information comes from
The data pipeline uses public NBA statistics and player information, Basketball-Reference season and contract tables, and transaction observations used in contract and trade calibration. Site-admin corrections can update roles, rosters, salary information, and other fields. Player photographs and team marks identify the subjects being discussed; they are not evidence of endorsement.
- NBA Stats: basketball statistics and player context.
- Basketball-Reference: season tables and contract information used by the data pipeline.
- Spotrac transactions: market observations used in calibration.
What a score cannot tell you
A model cannot fully capture defensive assignments, teammate quality, coaching instructions, health, or future development. A high role score does not establish that a player can take on a different role. Contract estimates are scenarios, not reports of an offer or a guarantee that a deal is legal or available.
Data and contracts do not necessarily update at the same moment. Check the season, team, role, and salary basis before drawing a conclusion. Missing inputs should reduce confidence, not be interpreted as proof of poor play.
How to start
Read the five-lens reading guide, then open a player and compare him with others in the same role. Use the methodology to inspect the scoring framework and our analysis standards to distinguish calculated results, interpretation, and reported facts.
CourtsideIQ is not the NBA, an NBA team, or an official league statistics service.
